When looking for merit in a design, the phrase “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” couldn’t be better to describe ‘beauty’ in the architectural world, where no fixed parameters of beauty exist. Therefore, while design may be subjected to aesthetic criticisms, comfort and contextual compatibility remain as key metrics in any design project. It can be said that a good design is where “form (ever) follows function”, where structures are built and spaces created to be comfortable and complimentary to their surroundings.

Firstly, we study each client’s requirements, and from there we analyse the following: site conditions and the design of existing buildings. This helps us to determine the aesthetics and design of our tensile membrane structures based on the surrounding context and our client’s intent.

We could do a deep dive into our client’s design preferences by visiting their company’s website or social media. However, the best solutions are produced by communicating with the clients directly as they can remain fully engaged in the design process.

Material and structural system selection

Each project comes with its own unique specifications and desired shapes. Knowing which material to use for each project is important since each material has its own special features and flexibility that will meet the project’s unique requirements. For a design to reach its full potential, our tensile materials can be combined with a cable system, architectural steel frames or even a specialised hybrid system to create a greater variety of shapes.

Back-to-back material selection and searching for ideas could work in some projects where we may propose more than one material.

The internet is the most powerful reference platform for us to gain inspiration, but our objective is never to imitate but always to produce new and unique designs.
